All these pictures, with the exception of the last one were taken from the balcony of our room, 114 at the Orchidacea Hotel at Kata Beach, Phukey, Thailand. They offer a side on view of the Kata Beach Bay
This picture shows Kata Beach on Dec 23rd at around 16:20. This is how the beach and bay looked a couple of days before the tsunami struck.
This picture shows Kata Beach Dec 26th at around 10:20. This was just a few minutes after I pulled the curtains and noticed the bay appeared to have debris floating in it. I am unsure how long this was after the tsunami struck but looking at the debris being close to the shore I guess it can only have been a few minutes. Notice how far in the sea is; right up to the sea wall.
This picture shows Kata Beach on Dec 26th just before 10:25. Already the debris is starting to float out to sea. Notice how the sea has receeded from the sea wall.
This picture shows Kata Beach on Dec 26th at around 10:25. Only 3 minutes after the previous picture and yet the sea is almost back at the sea wall again. Waves can be made out sweeping across the bat from the north east.
This picture shows Kata Beach from on Dec 26th at around 10:25. Taken during the same minute as the previous picture the sea is right up against the sea wall again.
This picture shows Kata Beach on Dec 26th at around 11:01. You can see how far the sea had receeded. This happened several times during the previous 30 minutes.
This picture shows our hotel room facing south on Kata Beach on Dec 27th at around 08:15. I have marked with a red circle where I believe our hotel room was. This picture was taken from the side of the life guard tower that can be seen from the pictures taken our hotel room. You can see how close the base of our hotel was to the sea at the south end of the bay.
