The government have announced that the referrendum on the EU Constitution that they promised in their election manifesto and which Jack Straw and Tony Blair both insisted would go ahead as long as there was a treaty to ratify, will not now go ahead. The government claims it is because of the uncertainty surrounding the future of the treaty.
However ...
The EU said that they will continue to press on with the Constitution and try and get 20 of the 25 countries to ratify it so that it can come back in two years time and try again. If the UK votes against the treaty it's another vote against. Tony Blair has already ratified the treaty in advance of the referrendum.
So, has the referrendum been abandoned because of uncertainty or has it been abandoned so that the UK counts as one of the 20 ratifying member states needed to make sure they can try again in 2 years time? Bearing in mind that Tony Blair wants the Constitution and has been campaigning for it's acceptance, you can draw your own conclusions.
Either way, it's another election promise they've gone back on.
